Who is Lalith Gunaratne?

Lalith Gunaratne is an avid student of human behaviour. He is constantly seeking the answers to the Socratic question of "what makes a meaningful life?". He is a product of both the East and the West, which allows him to transcend cultures and understand the nature of people and relationships in a host of situations in both professional and personal settings.

His educational background covers diverse disciplines including Engineering, Marketing, Leadership and Responsible Business (CSR) and is complemented by his personal research and inquiry into the humanities covering religion, spirituality, psychology, psychotherapy, biology, neuroscience, sociology, anthropology and history. This affords him a unique perspective of the human condition and in particular how people endure in a competitive world of suffering and challenge. He celebrates the human spirit and its endeavour to overcome life's challenges and live a life of balance in the middle path. He is a proponent of the Power of Balance.

Lalith is a successful entrepreneur who brings both practical experience and a diverse worldview to the arena of organizational consulting, coaching, training, facilitation and corporate social responsibility. He pioneered a solar energy venture in the late 1980's which was subsequently sold to Shell Renewables International in 1999 and has intimate knowledge of setting-up and running a business.

He also established and was the Head of the Board of a non-governmental organization, the Energy Forum, in Sri Lanka http://efsl.lk, which promotes rural and renewable energy. This experience provided further insight into setting-up and sustaining a non-profit organization and the accompanying challenges such as keeping its team motivated and inspired to engage with government, donors and civil society to be advocates for renewable energy.

He has international consulting experience in renewable and rural energy where he focused on technology-human interface issues, government policy and capacity building working through World Bank, Asian Development Bank and other donors. He was a consultant on the USAID South Asia Regional Initiative-Energy project where he conducted studies and worked on projects to make the region energy secure.

In 2002, he established Sage Training in Sri Lanka in association with Robert Vanderwall of Sage Training Australia. He has facilitated leadership and team building workshops for a host of organizations in the private, government sectors and with NGOs. He is also a trained facilitator and International Trainer for the British Council's Dreams + Teams as well as other programs where he trained teachers and youth on leadership. He has facilitated these programs in Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Kenya, Malawi and Namibia.

His business consulting work evolved to coaching executive leaders in culture transformation processes. He also facilitates workshops and has worked with business, non-profit organizations, international NGOs and UN for strategic planning and themes such as climate change, energy, conflict and intercultural dialogue.

Lalith co-authored, Solar Entrepreneur's Handbook and Altered States, a booklet based on a research study done on Corporate Social Responsibility in Sri Lanka. He also co-developed a CSR Handbook for the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and the Voluntary Agenda for Responsible Business.

He also co-authored chapters in the books World Guide to CSR and Leadership for Sustainability (Greanleaf Publishers).

Lalith is also a blogger to Ode Magazine www.odewire.com and Groundviews www.groundviews.org where he contributes with social commentary on leadership, sustainability and spirituality.

He has a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (Nuclear Option) from Canada, a Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing, United Kingdom and MSc in Responsibility and Business Practice from University of Bath, United Kingdom. His current research and inquiry is on human behaviour and spirituality.

He is married to Samantha and is blessed with four children.
